Abstract:<\/strong> The purpose of this article is to describe the subjective experience of the diagnosis of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the cultural meanings that shape this experience. Based on interviews and discussion groups with diagnosed people and their families in Chile and France, this article show that ADHD can acquire multiple meanings. From a thematic analysis, we identifed three registers or ways of living and thinking about ADHD. In the defcit register, the disorder is experienced primarily as a failure of certain abilities. In the disruption register, the disorder is experienced as disrupting the person\u2019s life, personality and interactions, which must then be normalized. In the register of hidden potential, on which this article focuses, ADHD is simultaneously thought of as a diffcult and valuable condition, a source of exceptional capacities that are often hidden in the ordinary functioning of social life. We therefore invite reflection that identifies the factors of mobilization or non-mobilization of the hidden potential register, with particular emphasis not only on relational confgurations, socio-economic variables, and the gender variable, but also on the institutional and political context of each country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resumen:<\/strong> El prop\u00f3sito de este art\u00edculo es describir la experiencia subjetiva del diagn\u00f3stico de Trastorno por D\u00e9ficit de Atenci\u00f3n con Hiperactividad (TDAH) y los significados culturales que modelan dicha experiencia. Basado en entrevistas y grupos de discusi\u00f3n con personas diagnosticadas y sus familias en Chile y Francia, este art\u00edculo muestra que el TDAH puede adquirir m\u00faltiples significados. A partir de un an\u00e1lisis tem\u00e1tico, identificamos tres registros o formas de vivir y pensar el TDAH. En el registro del d\u00e9ficit<\/strong>, el trastorno se experimenta principalmente como una falla de ciertas capacidades. En el registro de la perturbaci\u00f3n<\/strong>, el trastorno se vive como una disrupci\u00f3n de la vida, la personalidad y las interacciones de la persona, las cuales deben ser luego normalizadas. En el registro del potencial oculto<\/strong>, sobre el cual se centra este art\u00edculo, el TDAH es pensado simult\u00e1neamente como una condici\u00f3n dif\u00edcil y valiosa, una fuente de capacidades excepcionales que a menudo permanecen ocultas en el funcionamiento ordinario de la vida social. Invitamos, por tanto, a una reflexi\u00f3n que identifique los factores que permiten o impiden la movilizaci\u00f3n del registro del potencial oculto, con especial \u00e9nfasis no solo en las configuraciones relacionales, las variables socioecon\u00f3micas y de g\u00e9nero, sino tambi\u00e9n en el contexto institucional y pol\u00edtico de cada pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
